Episode Recap: Episode 5

Sally Spared, Rock Garden Debacle

After being spared at the previous Tribal Council, Sally is ecstatic to still be on the La Mina tribe. Citing she would still be an asset to the tribe, she is out to prove her worth to the tribe. Whether the alliance of four made the right decision is still to be determined.

Over at Casaya, Aras, Courtney and Shane struggle to keep the fire going. In the corner of Aras' eyes, he notices that Bruce is constructing a rock garden of sorts. A confrontation ensues after Aras addresses how Bruce's priorities are not in the best interest of the tribe. Bruce snaps back and accuses Aras of making a childish comment. Aras has had enough with his tribe and desires to be sent to Exile Island.

Reward Challenge: For Cod's Sake

The reward challenge is an assembly line that requires the tribe to toss bags of rice, beans and cod down a line of five tribe members. The tribes can switch positions in during the challenge. The first person must rush to the boat in the ocean carrying the several items that need to be tossed. Once returning to shore, the Survivor must wait until the item goes down the assembly line. Once that is completely, they can head back for more. If a fish is sent down the line, the final person must chop off its head and tail before continuing. First tribe to transfer 8 items wins reward and the right to send someone to Exile Island.

The stakes: all of the items used in the reward challenge will be given to the winning tribe. The losing tribe will only get to choose from rice or beans.

Both tribes start off fairly even but it is Bruce that loses momentum for Casaya after he has a difficult time chopping off the fishes' heads. Bruce switches out with Bobby who is able to lob off the head and tail with one stroke. Meanwhile, La Mina has a good pace at the challenge but a transfer of fish between Dan and Sally causes the tribe to fall behind. Eventually, Casaya seals in their fourth consecutive victory.

Out of respect, Casaya sends Terry back to Exile Island.

Enjoying Reward and in Exile

A huge downpour floods the Casaya camp, making it difficult to get any fire going. The tribe resorts to eating the fish raw. Cirie, skeptical about eating raw fish, decides to anyways but hopes nothing will happen to those eating the fish. Meanwhile, La Mina is excited to receive some sort of nourishment - but it comes at a cost. Nick and Austin's body do not handle the beans well and as a result, they are constantly driven to use the restroom. Both are feeling out of their element and the food that was supposed to strengthen them did the averse effect.

Back at Casaya, Bruce seeks shelter in the outhouse where Bobby joins him. The two enjoy the wine the tribe won from the challenge. Bobby is not thrilled with not being given a spot in the shelter so drinking the wine selfishly seems to be a proper repayment. The two men bond in the shelter and promise never to vote each other out. Bobby says he will jump ship the chance he gets.

Not much from Exile Island since Terry has already found the idol. He only expresses concern that his tribemates are able to endure camp life without him.

Immunity Challenge: Buried at Sea

Three tribe members must row out to the ocean and retrieve four skulls attached to four coffins. After collecting all of the pieces, the two other Survivors must assembly the skulls in the correct position in order to win immunity.

It is Terry, Dan and Nick's swiftness that gets them far ahead of Aras, Danielle and Courtney. While both tribes eventually make it back to the mat to assemble their puzzle, Sally and Austin are able to get the puzzle together, securing 3 more days on the island for the La Mina tribe.

Tribal Council: Dysfunctional Functional Family

Back at camp, the plotting begins and it is really up in the air since almost everyone's name is thrown out there. Shane comes back and urges that Bobby be voted out for threat of him jumping ship at a merge situation. The idea is quickly shot down after Aras claims that Bruce cannot be trusted and that the alliance of four would not have a hold over him if they needed his vote. Shane backs off his idea and goes along with the fact that Bruce is going. He tells Bobby that his name was considered but now it has turned to Bruce leaving at Tribal Council. He does swear on his son that he would not vote for Bobby. As more time passes, Danielle suddenly thinks ousting Bruce would not be the wrong idea. She claims Bobby is a bigger threat to the tribe and rallies the women and goes to Shane and tells him of her plan. Shane is confused after his idea was shot down, the attention went to Bruce, and now it is Bobby again. The tribe, in disarray, head into Tribal Council, with no real idea as to who would be leaving.

Bruce and Bobby explain the wine situation and Bruce makes a diplomatic move by 'apologizing' to everyone in the tribe. Still, the two men receive the most votes at Tribal Council. Shane votes for Aras to throw his vote away and to uphold his promise to Bobby. Aras and Bobby band together to try and vote out Bruce. Bruce votes out Courtney to make her nervous about her position in the tribe. But it is the women's three votes that has the attorney from LA get the boot, the first male boot of the season.
